Puncture Repairs

Have you had a tyre puncture in Geelong or surrounds?

If so we can certainly help you.

Your first priority is to find a safe place to pull off the road. You will need to establish if your car:-

  1. is equipped with a spare or temporary wheel or
  2. a pump/temporary repair kit
  3. or perhaps your car is fitted with “Runflat” tyres

Making sure that you're out of the way of any traffic before removing the punctured tyre and fitting the spare wheel as per the instructions in your vehicle Owners Manual. It may be easier and safer to call the RACV or Roadside Assist to do this if you have cover for this service.

If you have difficulty, give us a call on your local store number and we'll do our best to assist over the phone.

Your next priority is to get the punctured tyre repaired as soon as possible, especially if your tyre is a space saver or speed limited.

You can tell if it's a space saver tyre, as they're generally smaller in size than your regular tyres. Call in to one of our stores and we will give you some options for fixing the puncture if possible, or replacement. Most puncture repairs will be done while you wait, or as soon as possible

Whilst a “string” plug will provide a quick repair this is not legal repair and will only present a temporary solution. At Tyrepower we will only perform a legal repair to punctured tyres and generally a mushroom plug is fitted which is a permanent seal and will last for the life of the tyre.

Will you need to repair or replace your tyre?

If a tyre is punctured in the tread area by a small object it is usually repairable, unless the tyre has been driven with low pressure for an excessive period of time.

Check out the below diagram for a guide as to what area of the tyre is able to be repaired.

Damage to shoulder is not repairable while damage to center of tread is often repairable

Before you get a puncture, you also want to make sure that your spare tyre is serviceable. It should be correctly inflated and have minimum 1.6mm of tread. If you would like us to check it for you, don't hesitate to drop by for a free tyre check.

A puncture can be caused by a number of different problems.

  1. Most commonly by small sharp object piercing the casing of the tyre causing the loss of air pressure. Generally these will be objects like nails, screws or small road debris.
  2. By impact with a kerb or pothole in the road
  3. Or as a result of impact damage (crack), rust or deterioration of the rim which has resulted in it being unable to retain air pressure in the tyre.

HOW IS TYRE REPAIRED?

Our friendly team at Geelong Team Tyrepower will take the guess work out of a repair by removing the tyre completely from the wheel and checking for any structural integrity issues which could put you and your family in harm’s way.
